Gates A. Johnson and family papers, 1855-1908.

Papers of a St. Paul (Minn.) civil engineer and surveyor, two of his sons, and of Samuel G. Kent, another surveyor with the St. Paul city engineer's office. The material is principally concerned with the Johnsons' survey work for Ramsey County, for St. Paul real estate promoters and developers, and for several railroad companies. The collection includes personal diaries, surveyor's notebooks, miscellaneous account books, maps of St. Paul subdivisions, and a map showing a portion of a railroad line proposed for southern Minnesota. Most of the surveying projects involved tracts of land in St. Paul and in four then-rural townships in Ramsey County (Minn.). There is information about the construction of railway lines (1870), about a survey (1866) for a line to run from Big Stone Lake to Hastings (Minn.), and about an elevated railroad to run between St. Paul and Minneapolis (ca. 1884).
